Profoundly autistic preschool children are at the risk of being left behind.
Intensive early intervention¹ services can transform the lives of young children with profound autism. While these services are routinely provided in many countries, Australian families face significant hurdles.
Without these services, many children will continue to struggle to communicate and engage in high levels of unsafe behaviour as they try to navigate a world that doesn't understand them.
We know that 84% of the children who participated in our intensive early intervention programs learnt critical life skills faster than they ever have before. More than half of them doubled their rate of learning.²
But too many families are struggling to access funding.
Recent changes to the NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) have made it significantly harder to access enough funding for intensive services, with families needing to go through complex appeals and reviews.
These lengthy appeal processes are hugely traumatic for the family and result in harmful disruptions to services for children — even when all other interventions have failed to help their child.
While the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) employs private legal representation, families are left to navigate this complex system with no legal support. This process can take up to two years, delaying vital early intervention — when every moment counts.
With Autism Partnership’s support, every one of these families has successfully overturned their initial funding decisions, allowing their children to access the intensive services they need.
Helping families navigate the NDIS process is critical.
That’s why Autism Partnership provides thousands of hours of Direct NDIS Family Support each year at no additional cost to families.
We’ve supported more than 150 families through the NDIA’s review and appeals process, standing alongside them every step of the way.
By sharing our expertise and providing daily support, we help families secure life-changing services for their children — services they might otherwise never access.
"The NDIS was a very difficult and long-winded process. The many terms and conditions and NDIS communications, which were full of jargon and legal wording, made it exceptionally hard to understand.
Without Autism Partnership’s in-kind Direct NDIS Family Support, we would have probably given up on intensive intervention.
I’m so glad that wasn’t the case; intensive intervention has been the best thing for our family. To see where my son is now - is unbelievable."

"Getting the appropriate NDIS funding for Julius was a huge battle. We were at the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT) for a year when the NDIA finally settled with us just before our hearing.
The NDIS plan review process is highly complex. It's almost a mystery.
Without Autism Partnership's support, we wouldn’t have known what to do or how to appeal the NDIA's initial funding decision, and it would have taken a lot longer than 12 months - with more precious time being lost. The support and guidance made a huge difference.
It was tough but worth it all to get Julius the support he needs."
